Prohibition on Selling or Installing Rebuilt or Recycled Airbags

Selling or installing certain rebuilt or recycled vehicle parts has been prohibited since 2002. This prohibition applies to airbags, seat belts with a pretensioner (pyrotechnic locking device) or computers that control airbags or seat belts. Safety components can only be replaced using new genuine factory parts. Individuals who contravene these new requirements are liable to a fine of $3,000 to $9,000*.

Moreover, deactivating an airbag without having first obtained authorization from the SAAQ is prohibited. Anyone who fails to abide by this provision is liable to a fine of $300 to $600.

* Other fees may be added to the fine provided under the Highway Safety Code (contribution to the IVAC crime victims compensation program, registry fees, etc.).
