Road Safety

It's the Law

The Highway Safety Code provides that in a vehicle, children whose sitting height is less than 63 cm (measured from the seat to the top of the head) must be placed in a child car seat that is suitable for the child's weight (infant seat, child seat or booster seat).

Children who measure 63 cm or over in a sitting position must be seated in a booster seat until they can safely use a seat belt by themselves. To be used safely, the seat belt must lie across the child's collar bone and hips.

In a Taxi
In a taxi, if a child car seat is unavailable, a child must be restrained using a seat belt, except where the child is too small to maintain an upright position. In such a case, it is recommended to fasten your seat belt and then hold the baby in your arms. It is important not to restrain it with you because you could crush it with your weight in the event of sudden braking or impact.

Penalties
In addition to endangering the life of your child, violation of this safety rule is an offence subject to a $80 to $100 fine and 3 demerit points. Other fees may be added to the fine provided under the Highway Safety Code (contribution to the IVAC crime victims compensation program, registry fees, etc.).
