Parents... Allies in Child Safety
As a parent, you have an important role to ensure your child receives maximum protection. Travelling on a school bus can be a risk for children who do not obey safety rules.
Constantly Remind Children About the Following:
It is important to wake up early to avoid missing the bus. This allows enough time to eat a healthy breakfast and get to the bus stop on time;
- Always use the sidewalk when walking to and from the bus stop;
- If no sidewalk is present, walk on the left-hand side of the road, facing traffic..
Getting on the Bus
Wait quietly for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it;
- Wait for the bus lights to flash and for the driver to open the door;
- Get onto the bus in single file and hold the handrail..
On the Bus
To avoid disturbing the driver, it is important:
- to stay seated and remain quiet;
- to keep your head and arms in the bus at all times;
- to avoid horseplay and commotion;
- not to leave lunch bags or backpacks in the aisle;
- not to throw objects or food inside or outside of the bus.
Getting off the Bus
Many school bus accidents occur when children are getting off the bus because they are standing too close to the bus. Stress the importance of the following:
- Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting out of your seat;
- Get off the bus in single file without roughhousing and hold onto the handrail;
- Immediately walk away from the bus and never go behind the bus;
- Tell the driver if an item falls under the bus. If you cannot talk to the driver, wait for the bus to leave before picking up the item.
The Ten Steps Rule
Here is a simple way to make sure children cross in front of a bus safely:
- Take ten steps after leaving the bus before crossing, that way you can see the driver, who can see you;
- Look left and right, then left again to check that there is no traffic before crossing;
- Cross quickly but without running..
