Seat belts are internationally recognized for offering the best possible protection to vehicle occupants. That is why all motorists have been required to wear a seat belt since 1976.
Under the Highway Safety Code, every person must wear, properly fastened, the seat belt with which his or her seat is equipped. Children whose sitting height is less than 63 cm (measured from the buttocks to the top of the head) must be restrained in a safety seat suitable for the child's weight and height.
Offenders are liable to a fine of $115 to $154 and three demerit points.
Drivers are responsible for making sure that passengers under the age of 14 fasten their seat belts. Drivers who fail to do so will have to pay the fine and have demerit points entered on their record.
Passengers age 14 and older will be fined and have demerit points entered on their record if they do not buckle up.
