Requirement to drive a vehicle fitted with an alcohol ignition interlock device.
Condition X is indicated on the front of your licence, and a description appears on the back.
Any person convicted of an alcohol-impaired driving offence who must undergo a comprehensive assessment or a maintenance assessment by the Association des centres de réadaptation en dépendance du Québec (ACRDQ).
To be allowed to take the wheel again, this person must get a driver's licence with Condition X from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). This condition requires the mandatory use of an alcohol ignition interlock device for one, two or three years, or for life, depending on the number of convictions received within a reference period of 10 years and the blood-alcohol concentration recorded when the person was pulled over.
To be eligible for a driver's licence with Condition X:
Only a probationary licence or a regular driver's licence.
Note: Condition X does not authorize the operation of a motorcycle, moped or motorized scooter.
An alcohol ignition interlock is a device that prevents a vehicle's engine from starting if it detects the presence of alcohol in the operator's body. This device measures the driver's blood-alcohol level and records all of the data involved in its use.
Only one model of alcohol ignition interlock is approved by the SAAQ.
It is available, by lease only, at a GUARDIAN INTERLOCK SERVICE (GIS) centre, or at participating LEBEAU VITRES D'AUTOS or DURO VITRES D'AUTOS branches. Call 1 888 252-6638 to find out the location of the centre or branch nearest you that installs such devices.
The SAAQ will send you a letter authorizing the installation of an alcohol ignition interlock device.
Here are the steps to follow to obtain such a licence:
There are charges for installation¹, leasing the device and periodic checks. There is also a charge for removing the device.
Every two months, the device must be taken to the GIS centre or the LEBEAU VITRES D'AUTOS or DURO VITRES D'AUTOS branch for inspection and to have a report printed, which you will be given so that it can be submitted to the SAAQ upon request.
Terms and conditions of use of an alcohol ignition interlock device are determined by the SAAQ and provided in Appendix B of the service agreement. If you fail to abide by these terms and conditions, your licence could be suspended for a period of three months.
If you operate a vehicle without an alcohol ignition interlock device, or drive while under licence suspension, you could be subject to a fine, and the vehicle you are driving may be seized and impounded for 30 days at your expense.
