The Automobile Insurance Act requires that the owner of a motor vehicle operated on Québec roads carry liability insurance of at least $50,000 covering property damage caused by the vehicle to another party in the event of an accident. Carriers must have coverage of at least one million dollars, two if they transport dangerous substances. Policies providing this third-party coverage are offered by private insurers.
