The insurance contribution for the licence is determined on the basis of your driving record. Driver's licence fees and service charges are added.

Impact of Demerit Points
Demerit points entered on your driving record are now taken into account to determine the amount of the insurance contributions you are required to pay to renew your licence:

  • to drive a passenger vehicle (Class 5);
  • to drive a motorcycle (Class 6).

When drivers hold both classes, the amounts of their insurance contributions for Class 5 and Class 6 are added together for the following reasons:

  • Drivers who engage in risky behaviour with one type of vehicle (car) are likely to engage in risky behaviour with another type of vehicle (motorcycle).
  • The average cost of compensation paid to driver’s licence holders who have demerit points on their record is higher than the cost of compensation paid to licence holders who do not have demerit points.
