What Is a Driver's Licence Plus?

Anyone who wishes to enter the U.S. by land or sea ports of entry are required to present a valid passport or another document approved by the U.S. that indicates their identity and citizenship.

A driver's licence Plus is a driver's licence and a travel document that will allow you to cross the U.S. border, whether you are travelling by car, train, bus or boat... This licence cannot be used to enter the U.S. by air travel.

The licence Plus is a licence that certifies the holder’s driving privilege. All conditions, obligations and penalties that apply to the regular licence also apply to the licence Plus.

Conditions to obtain a driver's licence Plus

Be a Canadian citizen who is a resident of Québec (submit a recognized document (PDF)) ;
Hold a valid plastic driver's licence or probationary licence (a licence is not valid if it has been suspended, revoked or has been expired for more than 3 years);
Have read the Applicant's Guide;
Have made an appointment in one of the 26 authorized service centres (PDF) .

The appointment, which lasts 30 minutes, will allow the SAAQ to:

verify your citizenship and documents (PDF) ;
analyze your request and decide whether you are eligible for the licence Plus;
take a new photo and ask you for a signature (mandatory);
explain to you how to activate your licence Plus when you receive it by mail (within 10 business days).

How to prepare for an appointment

Before you go to your appointment, you must:

have filled out the Citizenship Questionnaire (without signing it)
have filled out the Travel Restrictions Questionnaire (without signing it)
have on hand two pieces of identification, one bearing your photo, as well as a document proving Canadian citizenship (go to the Applicant's Guide). A passport is not accepted as a proof of citizenship.
