A driver's licence is issued for a period of eight years. However, you must pay the fees and insurance contribution every year to keep your driving privilege.
Driving without a valid licence is an offence punishable by a fine of $300 to $600. Other fees may be added to the fine provided under the Highway Safety Code (contribution to the IVAC crime victims compensation program, registry fees, etc.). Furthermore, you will have to pass a knowledge and a road test if you have not held a valid licence for three years or more and want to obtain a licence again.
Late fees apply in addition to the amount owing on your payment notice.
The SAAQ charges additional fees for each cheque rejected by your financial institution for insufficient funds.
