To work as a taxi driver, a person must hold a taxi driver's permit issued by the SAAQ. This permit is valid for two years and can be used everywhere in Québec, except the city of Montréal.
You must hold a Class 4C driver's licence or higher (1, 2, 3, 4A or 4B). A person who holds a Class 4C licence is also authorized to drive vehicles from Classes 5, 6D and 8.
You must also hold a taxi driver's permit to drive a limousine.
To drive a taxi in one of these cities, you must meet the following requirements:
Make an appointment with the Bureau du taxi et du remorquage, by calling 514 280‑6600.
You will receive a letter to have your photo taken for renewal of your taxi driver's permit. Your probationary or driver's licence must be valid and you will have to pay a $53.50 fee to renew it. Your new taxi driver's permit, valid for two years, will be mailed to you a few days later.
If your taxi driver's permit for the cities of Québec, Longueuil or Laval was issued prior to June 30, 2002, the SAAQ will forward you an attestation of training equivalency. If you have not received an attestation, contact the SAAQ to request one:
If you completed the mandatory training program after June 30, 2002, the school where you received training will issue an attestation. If you did not receive an attestation, contact the school where you completed training to request one.
