Licence Suspension for an Unpaid Fine

Under the Highway Safety Code, the SAAQ suspends a driver’s licence or the right to hold a licence of an individual who has unpaid fines following a violation under the Highway Safety Code or a municipal traffic or parking bylaw.

The SAAQ is advised by the collecting entity of an unpaid fine and imposes these measures until the collecting entity notifies the SAAQ to confirm payment of the fine.

During a prohibition period
If you drive during a prohibition period, you are committing an offence.

As a result:

• Your vehicle may be seized for a period of 30 days. (If the vehicle does not belong to you, the Highway Safety Code requires that you advise the owner immediately. A seized vehicle is towed away and impounded at the owner’s expense.)
• You are liable to a $438 to $865 fine, plus legal fees. This amount is subject to change and includes fines provided under the Highway Safety Code, registry fees and a contribution to IVAC, (Please note that additional fees may apply).

Before lending or renting out your vehicle to someone, take the time to check that the prospective driver holds a valid licence.
