Several scientific studies have determined that fatigue could be responsible for 15% of traffic accidents involving a heavy vehicle. In addition, fatigue may be a determining factor in 30% to 40% of fatal heavy vehicle accidents. This proportion may even reach 40% to 50% in the case of fatal accidents of semi-tractor trailers that do not involve other vehicles.
Although professional drivers are not the only ones who suffer from fatigue while driving, they are at higher risk for fatigue-related accidents because of their long work hours, irregular schedules, night shifts and the large number of kilometres that they cover. Every year, hundreds of people die in fatigue-related accidents.
