Proper Use of Turn-Signal Lights

Professional drivers sometimes use their turn-signal lights (also called flashers) to send a message to other motorists, which unfortunately can cause confusion and result in regrettable accidents.

The Highway Safety Code specifies how to use turn-signal lights. Drivers must signal their intention by means of their turn-signal lights before:

  • changing lanes;
  • making a U-turn (if permitted);
  • passing;
  • making a turn;
  • leaving or returning to the roadway from the shoulder;
  • taking or leaving a parking space.

To ensure the safety of road users, drivers must signal their intention to execute a manoeuvre in a continuous manner over a long enough distance. Once the manoeuvre has been completed, it is just as important to turn off the turn-signal lights to avoid any confusion.
