Vehicle Registration

Registering a Vehicle Purchased from an Automotive Dealer

If you are buying a vehicle from an automotive dealer, go to an SAAQ service outlet with proof of identification, preferably your driver's licence, and an "Attestation de transaction avec un commerçant" form duly completed by the automotive dealer.

  • If you do not have a driver's licence, contact the SAAQ to find out which documents are required.
  • If you are buying a new vehicle, you must have on hand a form entitled “Description of a new vehicle”.
  • If you are buying a used vehicle, you must have the prior registration certificate, bearing the signature of the former owner and the automotive dealer.
  • Are you under age 18? You must have a written authorization (PDF) from your father, mother or legal guardian.

Thinking of buying a vehicle from the United States that has been damaged?
It is up to each individual considering the purchase of a vehicle imported from the USA to question its origin and ownership record, with a view to ascertaining if it had been declared a total loss following hurricane damage in Louisiana in September 2005. A vehicle declared a total loss cannot be licensed for use on the road in Québec. Various Websites can help you to research the vehicle under consideration.
