Before buying a vehicle or signing a long-term lease, you can obtain a copy of the vehicle record from the SAAQ (find out the cost to request a vehicle record). Compiled from data in the SAAQ's registration record since 2001, this document contains information to help you make an informed decision.
What information does it contain?
- Descriptive data about the vehicle
In addition to finding descriptive data about the vehicle (make, model, year, number of cylinders, net weight, etc.), you will learn, for example, if a vehicle has been rebuilt, if it has been in a serious accident or if the SAAQ has required it to undergo a mechanical inspection.
- Previous owners
The vehicle record also provides information about the previous owners. It lists, in descending chronological order, information on each individual (owner, long-term lessee or dealer) who has previously requested registration of the vehicle in Québec. If the previous owner is a business, you will know its identity. However, the SAAQ cannot divulge the name of individuals under the Act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the Protection of personal information. Under “Name” the word “Individual” will appear.
- Vehicle usage
The vehicle record can tell you for what purposes the vehicle has been used in the past. You can therefore find out if the vehicle in question was previously used as a taxi or for other business purposes.
